TWO HIGH SCHOOLS HAVE THREE PLAYERS SELECTED IN 2018 NFL DRAFT; 242 SCHOOLS REPRESENTED

Indianapolis – USA Football announced today that a total of 242 high schools contributed to the 256 players selected in the seven rounds of the 2018 NFL Draft on April 26-28. While the drafted rookies enter the NFL from a variety of backgrounds, one thing they have in common is an outstanding experience playing high school football.

KEITH MARTIN, USA Football’s managing director of football operations and father of two athletes drafted into the NFL had this to say, “As the father of two sons who play in the NFL, I know firsthand how important their high school experience had in their development and success.” Martin continued, “On behalf of USA Football, we congratulate all of the draftees, and pay a special thanks to all high schools and coaches who helped shape these young men into who they’ve become on and off the field.”

“We salute the 15,000 high schools that offer football and the almost 1.1 million student-athletes involved in the No. 1 high school participatory sport,” said Bob Gardner, executive director of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and USA Football board member. “In addition to providing an opportunity to play at the highest level of the sport, high school football provides students the opportunity to compete and learn valuable lessons that can lead to successful careers in all walks of life. We thank all the coaches across the country who are helping to shape our future leaders through the sport of football.”

Two high schools – LAKEWOOD (Florida) and SERRA (California) – had three players selected in the 2018 NFL Draft, while ten high schools – CALLAWAY (Mississippi), DAN RIVER (Virginia), IMHOTEP (Pennsylvania), NARBONNE (California), NORCROSS (Georgia), OSCAR FROMMEL SMITH (Virginia), STONEWALL JACKSON (Virginia), TAYLOR (Texas), TRINITY CHRISTIAN (Florida), and WASHINGTON (Florida) – each had two players selected.

The breakdown of the 12 high schools that had multiple players drafted by NFL clubs:

  • California and Florida led all states with six first-round selections in the 2018 NFL Draft. Pennsylvania followed with three players selected in Round 1.

  • Florida (35) had the most drafted players in 2018, while California (27) and Texas (27) tied for second. Georgia, which had the most players drafted in 2017 with 29 selections, finished tied for sixth in 2018 with 12.
  • Of the 32 players drafted in Round 1, 29 played multiple sports in high school (91 percent).
