A closer look at the nominees:

  • Colts complete surprising turnaround: A year after finishing a disappointing 2-14 to end a run of nine consecutive playoff appearances, the Indianapolis Colts are back in the playoffs after a 20-13 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. The Colts managed to complete this remarkable turnaround as their head coach, CHUCK PAGANO, battled leukemia and missed being on the team’s sideline for 12 games. Helping the Colts earn a playoff berth was QB Andrew Luck, who set a new rookie record for passing yards.
  • Bengals make rare return trip to playoffs: The Cincinnati Bengals didn’t let a midseason four-game losing streak dampen their playoff aspirations. With a 13-10 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, QB ANDY DALTON and the Bengals completed a run of six wins in seven games to give the franchise its first back-to-back playoff seasons since 1981-82.
  • Megatron sets new receiving record: JERRY RICE set a number of records many figured would never be broken. However, with a game to spare, Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson managed to surpass one of Rice’s most amazing records. With 225 yards receiving against the Atlanta Falcons, Johnson set a new single-season receiving yardage record of 1,892 yards, topping Rice’s mark of 1,848 yards set in 1995.
