A closer look at the nominees:

  • RGIII, Redskins battle back into playoff race:  Following a Week 9 loss at home to the Carolina Panthers, the Washington Redskins fell to 3-6 and the team’s hopes of a playoff run seemed lost. Two games later, the Redskins are in the thick of the postseason chase in the NFC. A 38-31 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day was the team’s second consecutive win, and was sparked by an impressive performance through the air by QB Robert Griffin III. RGIII threw four touchdown passes in his return to his home state of Texas.
  • Rice’s heroics lift Ravens past Chargers:  Down by three, the Baltimore Ravens faced a fourth- and-29 from their own 37-yard line.  Against all odds, RB Ray Rice provided one of the signature plays of the season to keep the Ravens’ drive for a tying field goal alive. On the stunning play, Rice caught a short pass from QB JOE FLACCO and weaved through the San Diego Chargers’ defense for the crucial first down. In overtime, the Ravens’ rookie K JUSTIN TUCKER kicked the winning field goal to secure a 16-13 victory.
  • Tannehill sparks late Dolphins rally for win: Riding a three-game losing streak entering Week 12, it appeared the Miami Dolphins might drop a fourth straight game after return specialist LEON WASHINGTON gave the Seattle Seahawks a seven-point lead following a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.  QB Ryan Tannehill, who struggled during the Dolphins’ recent slide, marched Miami 80 yards for the tying score. Tannehill drove the Dolphins 65 yards in the game’s final minute and a half to set up K DAN CARPENTER‘s winning field goal as time expired in a 24-21 victory.
