A closer look at the nominees:

  • Luck breaks rookie passing record:  With his head coach CHUCK PAGANO in attendance for the first time since being diagnosed with leukemia, QB Andrew Luck directed the Indianapolis Colts to a 23-20 win over the Miami Dolphins.  Luck threw for a rookie single game passing record 433 yards. The win also put the Colts who won just two games a season ago, in the thick of the AFC playoff chase.
  • Panthers end five-game skid:  For much of the 2012 season, the Carolina Panthers have been a team not living up to aspirations. However, QB CAM NEWTON and the Panthers were able to earn a confidence-building 21-13 win over the Washington Redskins.   The game featured a showdown between the two previous Heisman Trophy winners which snapped a 5-game skid for the Panthers.
  • Steelers rally past Giants:  The Pittsburgh Steelers faced an unusual game-day schedule, not to mention an emotional MetLife Stadium crowd following the events of Superstorm Sandy.  However, the Steelers relentlessly charged into the lead in the fourth quarter after playing from behind the majority of the game.  RB ISAAC REDMAN capped a 14-point fourth quarter for the Steelers with the game winning touchdown with four minutes remaining to give Pittsburgh its third consecutive win.
