Packers president Mark Murphy: “I’m confident we can reach an agreement”

“My sense is we’re going to get an agreement [with the NFLPA],” Green Bay team president Mark Murphy (right) told fans at the Packers Fan Fest at Lambeau Field this past weekend according to a report in the Green Bay Press-Gazette. “It’s really just a question of when, but it’s hard work… I’m very confident we can reach an agreement.”

Murphy is one of 10 club presidents/owners on the Management Council Executive Committee, which is responsible for labor negotiations.  He served as an NFLPA player rep in five of his eight NFL seasons with the Washington Redskins (including during the 1982 players’ strike). Murphy retired after the 1984 season and was assistant executive director for the NFLPA during the 1987 players’ strike.

“We don’t even want to talk about a work stoppage,” Murphy stated. “To me the process would have failed. Our goal is to reach an agreement with the players. That’s the highest priority for the league.”
